As we grow older, everyone experiences changes in abilities. With these age-related changes comes the need to do everyday tasks differently, from donning reading glasses to check the daily mail, to choosing to sit in a chair with arms to make getting in and out easier. Many assistive technology (AT) devices are available to help you do tasks differently, but sadly they are often overlooked as a tool to maintain independence.

If it is harder for you to operate the TV remote, get in and out of your bathtub, car or bed, talk on the phone or remember to take medications, AT can help. There are simple to not so simple AT devices that make hearing, seeing, remembering, moving and daily living tasks easier and safer. IPAT has created a booklet, “Maintaining Lifestyles as We Age“, to give you some ideas about AT devices that may be the answer to an age-related difficulty you or someone you know is having.

Take a look through the booklet, oftentimes a little AT here and there is all you need. If you have specific questions, call 800-895-4728 to get answers. Don’t forget, IPAT also has demonstration centers in Fargo and Bismarck with many of the AT devices you may be interested in seeing. Do you have a device favorite? If yes, let me know so I can share it with others.
