My mother has difficulty remembering. There have been several incidences when she forgot to turn off her oven or stove while cooking, ruining her meal. I am afraid that someday her forgetfulness will cause a fire — or worse. She needs some sort of an alarm to alert her when she leaves her cooking unattended. IPAT, please help!

We receive this request often at IPAT. Memory difficulties play a large role in an individual’s ability to remain safe and independent in their home. One of our biggest goals at IPAT is to help individuals remain in their homes for as long as possible through the aid of assistive technology (AT).
Below, check out a few clever pieces of AT for using the range safely. These devices remind individuals to stay close to the range while cooking. If the individual steps away from the range for too long, the devices will turn the oven or stove off. Keep in mind, this is not an exhaustive list. “The device is hardwired to the back of a stove top and has a mounted sensor that detects the presence of people up to 6 feet away. Once you turn on the stove top burner, the cook has to come back to the stove top area to check on the food at least once in a 6-minute period of time. If no one comes back to check on the food after 6 minutes, audio signals beep every 10 seconds for a 2-minute period of time. If no one comes back during those two minutes, the stove automatically turns off.”

“Stove reminder requires no effort to operate and starts automatically whenever the stove is turned on. It provides a periodic chime (and flashing LEDs) every 10 minutes whenever the stove is in use. The Stove Reminder has two separate parts: One part (the sensor) is attached to the outside of the stove’s power cord using velcro straps. This part automatically senses whether the stove is in use. The other part (the reminder) hangs on the wall and chimes and blinks every 10 minutes while the stove is in use – providing a helpful reminder that something is on the stove.”

Cooking is an important part of daily living in order to remain independent at home. The kitchen is the most dangerous area within the house and the cooker hob even more so.
I work as an Independent AT Consultant and for the last 3 years or so and have worked very closely with and represent Innohome on their behalf here in the UK. Innohome are a Finnish manufacturer of the Stove Guard System, this is a wireless cooker hob safety system which helps prevent cooker hob fires. It monitors the hob using a wireless sensor to detect an unusual rate of rise and maximum temperature before sounding an alert of a potential fire situation. If no action is taken within 1 minute of the alert it will send a radio signal to the Stove Guard cut-off switch and turn the cooker off. The Stove Guard cut off switch also has a built in microphone to pick up the audible alerts from other nearby detectors such as carbon monoxide and will then turn the cooker off.
In addition there is an alarm output to plug in a Telecare type transmitter to allow communication with a Lifeline Telephone system.
The Stove Guard has just won two important awards for Innovation of the Year here in the UK from FIRE Magazine and IFSEC . It also meets the new European Standard which was ratified on 5th January. Over 100,000 of these units have been supplied.

Pairing a stove monitor with an Explosive Gas/Carbon Monoxide detector is the best way to prevent any accidents from leaving on a gas burner. You can find Explosive Gas/Carbon Monoxide detectors at your local hardware store.
