Don’t you just love unexpected surprises? Those small, joyful moments that brighten your day. They don’t need to be big or significant, just enough to lift your spirits.

I experienced a couple of those delightful surprises this week. The first came via email, which is usually not a source of good news on a Monday morning. The message was from the state’s Division of Aging Services, asking for signatures on our 2024-2025 Senior Safety contract. While signing documents might seem routine, this program is a true gem, and every time we get to continue it, I feel a surge of joy.

If you’re not familiar with the Senior Safety program, check out ndassistive.org/senior-safety-program/. We’ve partnered with Aging Services for years to provide free assistive technology to people 60 and older, helping them stay safe and independent at home. It’s a highly valued initiative, and other Assistive Technology Act programs often express envy over the work we do.

The second surprise came from a phone call with a former colleague. She needed a device for her father, who dislikes his hearing aids but loves one of the items we offer through Senior Safety. We found a loaner in our inventory, which was a win-win: I got to reconnect with an old friend and saw firsthand how our services often intersect.

It’s moments like these that remind me of the wonderful surprises we get to share with others.
