Changes to the Senior Safety Program

For the past fifteen years, ND Assistive has been responsible for the day-to-day implementation of the Assistive Safety Devices Distribution Service, better known as the Senior Safety Program, through a contract with the North Dakota Department of Human Services, Aging Services Division. Through this program, we are able to provide up to $300 worth of assistive safety devices to assist older North Dakotans in their activities of safe daily living.

In an effort to remain efficient with the limited financial resources provided through the Older Americans Act, some items that have been provided in the past will no longer be eligible effective July 1, 2019. Durable medical equipment (DME) including walkers, rollators, and wheelchairs, transport wheelchairs, and accessories will not be covered. Other low-cost and easily accessible items such as reacher/grabbers, sock aids, shoe horns, swivel seat cushions will also no longer be covered. These items have been determined to not be cost-effective for the program to administer. These are devices to keep in mind when you need a gift for your parents, grandparents, or an aging loved one.
