In July of 2010, Lions Club International approved a Video Magnifier Program to be run by the Lions of North Dakota. This program is giving state residents over the age of 18 a chance to read again. It is specifically designed to help those with a vision loss that significantly impairs their ability to read, but who can still do so with the help of a video magnifier.
A video magnifier is an electronic magnifier that uses a video camera connected to a screen. Printed material and other objects can be placed under the camera and the magnified image is displayed on the screen. The following video will give you an idea of how they work.
The ND Lions program was created to provide video magnifiers under a lease agreement to eligible applicants. Under the agreement, you would be expected to put down a non-refundable $50 deposit, and pay a $20 per month lease fee for as long as you wish to use the device. Typically, the first payment is due at the time of device delivery, however, other payment options are available. To be considered for the Lions video magnifier program you will need to complete an application.
To obtain an application you can email videomagnifier@gmail.com, write The Lions Foundation of ND Video Magnifier Program at PO Box 761, Mandan, ND 58554, or call Kevin Vannett at 701-426-8050. You can also find a link to the application by clicking here. Applications are reviewed by a committee of eight on a quarterly basis. Once your application is approved, the video magnifier is delivered, set-up and you are taught how to use it. This final step is carried out by a qualified vision service provider, and is covered by your deposit fee.
To date, 85 video magnifiers have been placed throughout North Dakota. Those leasing the devices are viewing photos of family and friends, reading their mail, writing their own checks and staying current with news and book clubs. Remember, IPAT has video magnifiers in our demonstration centers. If you are curious to know if one might be a workable option for you, call 800-895-4728 and set up a time to try one out.
Yesterday I visited the Home First showroom in Fargo with my sister, Bonnie Wiberg. We saw a demonstration of the videomagnifier and believe it would be very helpful for her as she was recently diagnosed with macular degeneration and is having trouble reading. I am writing to request an application for her.
Thank you for your consideration.
